New Call of Duty, X-Men in 2011

As expected, Activision will continue to annualize many of its major franchises.

The publisher confirmed in its third-quarter earnings call this afternoon plans to release a new Call of Duty game for the holiday next year. It's unclear as of now if the game will be done by Infinity Ward or newly formed Sledgehammer Games, however.

"In the back-half of 2011, we'll launch a new, large-scale Call of Duty first-person action title," said Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg.

"The creative talent and resources that we now have devoted to the Call of Duty brand are unprecedented and given the gameplay we've seen to date, we could not be more excited about next year's release."

Hirshberg also confirmed several other titles slated for release next year, including games in the 'Hero' franchise, new Spider-Man and Transformers titles, and X-Men: Destiny, which is being developed by Silicon Knights.
